Music Program: Jan Sibelius Pieces for violin and piano Op. 79 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Méditation Op.42 No.1 Isang Yun Königliches Thema Arvo Pärt Fratres Alfred Schnittke Suite on old style Olivier Messiaen Louange à l'immortalité de Jésus Morten Lauridsen O Mysterium Magnum Introduction
The whole music program has been inspired by the latin text O Magnum Mysterium. There are many music examples existing through the ages, so one, that of 1545 by Adrian Willaert, the founder of polyphony up to Giovanni Gabrieli 1554-1612, William Byrd 1540-1623, Francis Poulenc 1899-1963 and finally Morten Lauridsen. The piece written in 1994 by the American composer Morten Lauridsen O Mysterium Magnum mimics classic Gregorian choral pieces in its style but with some modern influence as well. Lauridsen said "I wanted this piece to resonate immediately and deeply into the core of the listener, to illumine through sound". The music pulls its lyrics from the responsorial chant shown above. The serenity, the closeness with nature and the abiding calmness perfectly expressing a timeless sense of quietness of this program that presents music written by Jan Sibelius, Olivier Messiaen, Alfred Schnittke, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Isang Yun, Arvo Pärt
