Introduction
Ballads & Other Cautionary Tales will be a fun exploration of the intricate and powerful relationship between melody, harmony, lyrics and history. Music, particularly what is referred to as the Great American Songbook, holds a weight and depth that is multifaceted. There is power and strength in a melody. Certain chords and harmonic directions also tug on our emotions, and of course then there is the story-- the lyrics. The lyricists and composers that created these cautionary tales of wonder had motives and inspirations all their own. Added to this are some iconic renditions that become the bench mark or the "gold standard" if you will when one thinks of the identity of a particular song. Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan and others have claimed compositions as their own by adding their own untouchable versions to the mystique infused library of timeless compositions. In this concert we will explore some of these gems and just what makes a song timeless and able to transcend generations. Come expecting some stories, some tales, some surprises, but especially come to experience the conversation and power of music. |
