We are so excited to host for the fourth year a Piano Marathon in collaboration with the Music Department of Stony Brook University. This is an annual event featuring young professional pianists from Stony Brook University for a piano music program centered around a group of composers.
The 2025 Piano Marathon will explore the repertoire of Ludwig van Beethoven.
This rousing musical proposal presented by Rites of Spring Music Festival as the PREVIEW of the new season kicking off at the end of April is the result of joint forces with the Department of Music at Stony Brook University.
Heartfelt thanks go to Tina Dahl, wonderful pianist and chairman of the Department of Music and Gil Kalish, professor of piano, legendary pianist and major figure in American music making.

Somin Choi, pianist
Pianist Somin Choi is building a thriving career as a solo pianist and chamber musician, having performed on renowned stages across South Korea, the United States, and Europe. Her performances have graced prestigious venues such as Youngsan Art Hall, Mozarteum University Salzburg, Carnegie Hall, and the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City.
A passionate and dedicated educator, Somin has been recognized with an Honored Teacher Certificate for her students’ exceptional achievements, including First and Second Place awards at the Carnegie Hall-authorized Little Mozart and Crescendo International Competitions. She currently serves as a faculty member at Opus One Music and Voyager Music Lessons in Manhattan, as well as Musart Music in Long Island. Additionally, she is a jury member for the Crescendo International Competition.
Somin served as an instrumental accompanist in the Precollege Division of the Manhattan School of Music, collaborating with studios that include members of the New York Philharmonic and The Met Orchestra.
After moving to New York City, Somin pursued her Master of Music degree under Dr. Solomon Mikowsky at the Manhattan School of Music, where she later earned a Professional Studies Certificate with Prof. William Wolfram. She previously completed her Bachelor of Music degree under Prof. Jaewon Cheung at Sungshin Women’s University in Seoul, South Korea. Throughout her career, she has received guidance from renowned pedagogues and participated in masterclasses with Mikhail Voskresensky, Jerome Rose, Andrea Bonatta, Peter Ovtcharov, Youngho Kim, and Frank Reich.
Currently, Somin is pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Stony Brook University under the esteemed pianist and educator Prof. Gilbert Kalish. She is a recipient of a full scholarship and a Graduate Teaching Assistant fellowship.

Shu Wen Tay, pianist
Equally at home as a solo pianist and chamber musician, Singaporean pianist Shu Wen Tay has performed widely in Europe, Singapore and the United States, taking part in competitions including the Madrid International Piano Competition 2023, the 70th Maria Canals Piano Competition 2025, as well as the upcoming 2025 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition (Senior String Division).
As co-artistic director of SPIRITUS Festival, a chamber music collective serving communities on Long Island within the Suffolk County, she will perform in a series of concerts in the week of June 22-29. In July, she will attend the YellowBarn Chamber Music Festival.
She has had the privilege of working with members of the Cleveland and Borromeo String Quartets, especially during her Master of Music studies at the New England Conservatory of Music (NEC). Having an avid interest in music outside of the Classical canon, her ventures have included dabbling in early music, in performances with Red Dot Baroque (Singapore), as well as concerts with the Boston New Music Initiative. A passionate educator, Shu Wen has served as teaching assistant to non-majors at NEC and pianist accompanist at the NEC Preparatory School, and continues to teach undergraduates as part of a teaching assistantship at Stony Brook University, where she is undertaking her Doctor of Musical Arts degree.
She credits current and prior musical mentors including Gilbert Kalish, Vivian Weilerstein and Albert Tiu for her growth and development.

Shuting Ye, pianist
Shuting Ye is an internationally active pianist, born in Zhuhai, Guangdong, in September 1996. She began her piano studies at the age of six. In 2009, she was admitted to the Middle School Affiliated to China Conservatory of Music (MSCC) in Beijing, dedicating six years to piano performance. During her study in Beijing, she studied under esteemed Chinese pianists such as Feng Dan, Ren Shuman, Zhang Xinning, etc. In 2011, she was honored to perform at the Zhongshan Music Concert Hall as a representative of the piano department.
After graduating from MSCC, Shuting pursued advanced piano studies at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, under Dr. Xiaoli Ding. Her accolades include first place in the KMEA Freshman/Sophomore Piano Competition in 2016, numerous solo recitals at Washburn University’s White Concert Hall, performances at St. Mary’s Academy & College Concert Hall, a personal recital at Steinway & Sons Hall in Kansas City, and participation in the Kansas Music Teachers Association State Conference in Wichita. She also toured Zhejiang International Studies University Concert Hall in Hangzhou and Jinhua Art Institute Concert Hall in Jinhua during the summer of 2017. That same year, she was selected as an honored student for the annual Washburn honors concert. As a concert pianist, she has collaborated with notable artists such as violinists Yu-Fang Chen and Zsolt Eder. In 2019, she graduated summa cum laude from Washburn University, the only honored student from the music department, and was accepted into New York University for an M.M. in Piano Performance and an A.D. in Piano Pedagogy.
During her two-year study at NYU, she performed at the Black Box Theater with her chamber group, participated in the Beethoven to Contemporary Music Festival, performed in a Piano Quintet at the Ukrainian Museum in March 2020, and premiered pieces in the “Ring in the New” streaming concert in 2021. She attended masterclasses with renowned pianists Jeffery Swan and Deirdre O’Donohue. In 2021, Shuting graduated from NYU and is currently pursuing a DMA in Piano Performance at Stony Brook University, studying piano with the legendary Gilbert Kalish and harpsichord with the distinguished Arthur Haas.
At SBU, she has held three solo recitals, including one featuring the world premiere of “Prelude, Chorale, and Fugue on ‘The Divine Damsel of Devastation’” by composer Yikun Qi. She has participated in the Contemporary Chamber Players, performing concert cycles at the Staller Center in Stony Brook and the DiMenna Center in New York. Additionally, she has collaborated with bassoonist Joe Swift on YouTube premieres of “Conspiracy Theory” by Roger Zare and “Word Salad” by Logan Rutledge.

Sunmi Han, piano
Pianist Sunmi Han, having made her debut with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 11, has performed with numerous orchestras in both Asia and Europe such as Nord Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, Kalvory Vary Symphony, Kharkov Philharmonic Orchestra, Sung-nam Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica di Rome, etc.
She gave her European debut in Munich performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto no.1 in the Herkulessaal, and the recording of this work was made in Rome, with the Orchestra di Sinfonica de Rome. As a collaborative pianist, she made her debut with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra
as a guest pianist, performing premier of ‘Iscariot’ by Christopher Rouse. Sunmi obtained herBachelor’s Degree at the Juilliard School under the tutelage of Martin Canin and Yoheved Kaplinsky, and furthered her studies with Arie Vardi in Tel-Aviv, Israel. After her time in Israel, she was accepted into the class of Michael Schäfer at School of Performing Art and Theater in Munich, Germany. While studying her Master’s degree and Meisterklasse (Artist Diploma), she actively performed and collaborated with numerous musicians in Germany, and graduated with the highest distinction. Sunmi is currently pursuing her Doctoral of Musical Art degree at the Stony Brook University with Professor Gilbert Kalish.
