Autumnal Journey featuring Andrew Joseph, mandolins Terry Keevil, oboe at Pindar Vineyards 37645 NY-25, Peconic, NY 11958, USA Friday, October 25th, 2024, at 6:00pm Description The classical mandolin has roots in the lute family, evolving in Italy during the 17th century. Initially used in folk music, it gained prominence in classical compositions by the 18th century. Renowned composers like Vivaldi, Mozart, and Beethoven wrote for the instrument, enhancing its status. By the 19th century, it became popular in salons and stages across Europe. The "golden age of the mandolin,” spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries, saw the instrument rise in popularity in both classical and folk music. The classical mandolin has entered a new age of prominence based on its’ inclusion in several classical conservatory programs around the world, which has inspired a new generation of talented mandolinists and composers. In this program we will explore a wide range of music that was composed for the classical mandolin, along with works that have been transcribed and are often performed on the mandolin along with compositions by Andrew Joseph and duets with Oboist Terry Keevil. Andrew Joseph leads a varied musical career as a musician, composer, educator, conductor, and artistic director. Growing up immersed in the New York’s rich arts culture, Andrew’s musical upbringing was influenced by an eclectic mix of musical genres and artistic forms. A move to Nashville brought him into contact with the rich world of traditional folk instruments and music. Upon returning to New York, he developed a career as a touring/recording musician. He performed at notable New York area venues including Radio City Music Hall, The Theater at Madison Square Garden, The Apollo, MetLife Stadium, and in clubs and theaters around the country. Performing as a guitarist, bassist, and pianist with musical theater orchestras, jazz ensembles, and pop/rock groups allowed him to explore the specific qualities of various instruments in different musical contexts. After turning his focus to composition, he discovered a passion for the unique sound of the classical mandolin family of instruments, including the mandolin, mandola, octave, and baroque mandolins. As a seasoned mandolinist, guitarist and pianist, his compositions blend musical styles and approaches as he seeks to create new sound worlds with each piece. As a performer, Andrew is committed to sharing the sound of the classical mandolin, including the instrument’s extensive classical repertoire, with chamber music audiences. His approach to the mandolin is rooted in the “Modern German Technique” developed by Marga Wilden Hüsgen in the nineteen seventies. He is excited to share mandolin music from the baroque through the contemporary, including his own compositions/arrangements and transcribed pieces. Andrew’s passion for contemporary classical composition and traditional instruments has influenced his unique style and approach to performance and chamber music composition. Andrew is the founder and artistic director of Insieme Music and Arts, a chamber music performance organization committed to showcasing performers of plucked and stummed instruments and featuring composers for these instruments. Our mission is to build bridges between musical and art forms and genres and fostering collaboration between artists from different traditions.
