​About This Event
This program includes selections from great tango masters from the 1930s to the present: Alfredo Gobbi, Francisco Canaro, Osvaldo Pugliese, the revolutionary Astor Piazzolla and evolving even further, Pedro Giraudo. In this program, the ensemble offers the audience insight into how tango evolved from marginal venues to cafes and dance halls, and finally to prominent concert halls. The musical journey will be accompanied by short anecdotes about the main figures in the history of tango, as well as some explanation of the principal rhythms of the genre (milonga, waltz, and tango).
This event is presented by Rites of Spring Music Festival in collaboration with North Fork Arts Center in the frame of Energia Internacional program.

Batalá New York & Monica Sanctuario

The collaboration brings together Batalá New York, an all-women, Black-led Afro-Brazilian samba-reggae drumming ensemble, and Sanctuario, an Afro-Latin music and dance ensemble led by Mónica Ortiz Rossi

Batalá New York is the premier all-woman,  percussion ensemble activating partnerships, community building, and cultural awareness through high-energy performances of Afro-Brazilian music and dance.
We are presenting a loud, fearless, diverse and resilient community of female drummers. 
Batalá New York is one of approximately four Batalá groups that are all women and women-led. Batalá New York is part of a global community of bands playing Afro-Brazilian music under the name of Batalá. The Batalá bands principally play Samba Reggae, a world music that incorporates Brazilian Samba and Caribbean Reggae. We play the compositions and arrangements of Mestre Giba Gonçalves, founder of Batalá, and other mestres on metal drums with polymer skins.
Our music, instruments and costumes are primarily from Salvador da Bahia in the northeast of Brazil. All Batalá bands engage in fair trade and collaboration with the same drum makers, textile artists, printmakers, and other artisans in Salvador de Bahia.

The Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet is a highly acclaimed, Latin Grammy-winning virtuoso ensemble based in New York City. Led by Argentine bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo, the group plays a pivotal role in the evolution of contemporary Argentine tango. They bridge traditional roots (Orquesta típica) and the revolutionary "tango nuevo" of Astor Piazzolla with elements of European classical chamber music and American jazz

They have collaborated with renowned institutions like the Chesapeake Orchestra and the Yonkers Philharmonic, and have led workshops at Dartmouth College, the University of Maryland, and the University of Arizona, inspiring the next generation of musicians and tango enthusiasts alike.
Pedro Giraudo’s illustrious career spans over two decades of performing with the most revered figures in tango. As a bassist, composer, and arranger, he has collaborated with luminaries including Ruben Blades (on the GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY-winning album Tangos), Paquito D’Rivera, Pablo Ziegler, Hector Del Curto, and Luis Bravo’s Forever Tango. Additionally, he has worked with one of NYC’s most prestigious institutions, the New York Philharmonic, and has performed on several occasions with the New York City Ballet Orchestra.
With the Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet, presenters and audiences alike can experience the transformative power of tango reimagined—a dynamic and elegant performance that bridges cultural and musical boundaries.
